  • Ingredient List

    • 2 rounds of puff pastry
    • 2 apples, peeled, cored, and diced
    • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • 1 egg, beaten (for brushing)

  • Preparation

    1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and position the rack in the centre.
    2. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cook for 5–7 minutes, until the apples are tender but still slightly firm. Remove from heat and let cool.
    3. Unroll the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut it into 6–8 equal squares.
    4. Place a tablespoon of the apple mixture in the centre of each pastry square.
    5. Fold each square into a triangle to form a turnover, sealing the edges by pressing with your fingers or a fork.
    6. Brush the tops of the turnovers with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
    7. Place the turnovers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15–20 minutes, or until golden and fully cooked.
    8. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally dusted with powdered sugar.

FAQ – EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE COOKING

What pastry do I use for apple turnovers?

Puff pastry is the best choice for apple turnovers. It’s light, flaky, and crisps up beautifully in the oven. You can use frozen puff pastry sheets—just thaw, fill, and bake for an easy homemade treat.

How to seal puff pastry turnovers?

Use a bit of beaten egg or water around the edges of the dough, then press with a fork to seal. This helps prevent the filling from leaking and gives the edges a nice decorative finish

How long do you cook apple turnovers for?

Bake apple turnovers at 375°F (190°C) for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and puffed. Let them cool slightly before serving so the filling sets and doesn’t burn your mouth.

Do you leave apple turnovers out or refrigerate?

You can leave them out at room temperature for up to 2 days, in an airtight container. For longer storage, refrigerate them. Reheat in the oven to bring back the crispiness.

What are the best apples to use for apple turnovers?

Tart apples like Granny Smith, Cortland, or Honeycrisp work best. They hold their shape and balance the sweetness of the pastry. A mix of sweet and tart apples also works well for added depth.
